Hurricane Dean Update
Wow! That is about all we can say about the
rebuilding of Mahahual. The government; state,
local and federal, along with the people and private
industry, have truly done an amazing job with the
Nuevo Mahahual. The downtown project is in the
final stages of it’s amazing make-over. The pier,
which has been ahead of schedule, behind schedule
and now just about on schedule, is almost complete
to the pre-storm size. Our source at the pier tells us
the September and October ships have all been
canceled, but there are 60 ships still scheduled for
November thru January 1, so it looks like we will still
be able to salvage most or all of this year’s high
season. Really an amazing feat if you consider it has
been just one year since this town was all but
completely destroyed. No matter, the spirit of
Mahahual is alive again and it was nice to see
people once again enjoying the beautiful downtown
beaches and the new Malecon.
The Malecon is complete and promises to become
one of Mexico’s most beautiful waterfronts. The
completed Phase 1 stretches from Mahahual’s
signature lighthouse, through the downtown area,
covering about a mile of the downtown’s beautiful
white sandy beaches.
The pedestrian concrete walkway is built into the
sea wall, with overhead and ground level lighting,
public restrooms, lifeguard stands and yes, trash
can containers! New underground utilities include a
modern sewer system that even has an
environmentally friendly “grey “water recovery line.
The downtown rebuilding project is about 3/4ths
complete. The through street is paved and lined
with new coco trees, modern lighting and
sidewalks that are about to be poured.
This fishing village-turned second tier cruise ship port before Hurricane Dean, has been rebuilt into a show
place, and with the expected doubling in the volume of ships for 09, will become Mexico’s premier cruise
ship port in the very near future. The beautiful and modern world class port facility that opened just a few
years before the storm, now has a world class Malecon waterfront and downtown to support the booming
tourism and economic dynamo that the cruise ships bring.

We even have real street signs now! The paving
(using concrete pavers) of the remaining back
streets is the last of the work still to be finished,
with that scheduled for completion in late October.
With the return of
the ships set for
November 1, the
private business
owners are now
working quickly to
get their business
ready.
